More than 1.7 million students attended Georgia’s public schools, per the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. The highest enrollment was in elementary grades at 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by middle school with 388,733 students (22.7%), and high school with 539,092 students (31.4%).
Post-pandemic, Georgia schools continue to confront chronic absenteeism, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. To help address this, the department launched a statewide effort incorporating a real-time attendance dashboard, public awareness campaign and specialized supports for high-need districts to improve daily attendance rates.
Lawmakers in Georgia passed a bill in 2025 that revises school attendance regulations to prohibit expulsion based solely on absenteeism. The law also requires new reporting measures and supports alternative diploma pathways for students.
By 2026, Georgia posted an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, better than the national average of 15:1.
