Sequoyah Middle School recorded an enrollment of 483 African American students during the 2024-25 school year, representing a 4.7% decline from the prior year, according to the Georgia Department of Education.

The school’s total enrollment was 780 students for 2024-25. African American students represented 62% of the school population, constituting the largest demographic group.

Sequoyah Middle School is part of the Clayton County School District, with the central office located in Jonesboro.

Out of 65 schools in the Clayton County School District, Lovejoy High School reported the highest number of African American enrollees in 2024-25, totaling 1,614 students.

Georgia public schools had more than 1.7 million students enrolled, according to the Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Elementary schools had the highest enrollment with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by middle schools with 388,733 students (22.7%) and high schools with 539,092 students (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism continues to impact Georgia schools in the post-pandemic era, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. The state has responded with a new initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign, and focused intervention for high-need districts to address attendance issues.

In 2025, Georgia legislators enacted a revised school attendance law prohibiting expulsion solely for chronic absenteeism. The new policy introduces additional reporting criteria and is designed to coordinate with diploma pathway programs for students.

As of 2026, Georgia’s student-to-teacher ratio was approximately 14:1, better than the national average of 15:1.
