The Atlanta Falcons are proceeding with caution as rookie Jalon Walker works through a hamstring injury sustained during training camp. Head coach Raheem Morris provided an update Thursday, describing the injury as “minor” and explaining the team’s approach to Walker’s recovery.
Walker, the Falcons’ No. 15 overall draft pick, was absent from team activities for two consecutive practices. On Thursday, he participated in individual drills during a padded practice but was kept out of team drills, instead working on the sideline with trainers.
“We don’t want this thing to turn into a long-term thing,” Morris said.
Morris emphasized that the decision is precautionary and not indicative of a serious issue. The coaching staff aims to protect Walker from aggravating his condition by limiting his participation, despite his eagerness to return.
“The kid wants to go out there and I won’t let him,” Morris said. “… He is wearing me out trying to get out there at practice.”
Outside linebackers coach Jacquies Smith acknowledged Wednesday that missing reps is unfortunate for Walker, who is still adjusting to professional football. Morris agreed but expressed confidence that the missed time would not significantly hinder Walker’s development.
“For us, of course you want to have guys out there. Of course, you want guys for every single practice, but that is not the reality of our sport,” Morris said. “And the reality of our sport is that you have to find out how to manage guys, how to prepare the right way to get those guys ready to go. I have so much confidence in what (Walker) has done, who he is … (him being held out) I know it won’t hurt as much as most because of who this guy is.”
The Falcons continue to monitor Walker’s status as training camp progresses.
