Running back Bijan Robinson is having a standout 2025 season for the Atlanta Falcons, despite the team’s struggles. Robinson currently leads the NFL with an average of 132.4 scrimmage yards per game and has accumulated 1,589 total yards from scrimmage, which is second only to San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. Robinson’s rushing total stands at 995 yards, ranking him fifth in the league, while his 594 receiving yards are second among all running backs.

The Falcons’ overall performance this season contrasts sharply with Robinson’s individual achievements. The team holds a 4-8 record and is third in the NFC South. According to playoff simulations by The New York Times, Atlanta’s chances of reaching the postseason are less than 1%. In comparison, McCaffrey’s similar statistics have helped propel the 49ers to a 9-4 record and a strong playoff position.

Robinson’s production comes despite defenses being aware that he is central to Atlanta’s offense. He has consistently delivered high yardage even as opponents focus on stopping him.

Historically, few players have matched Robinson’s output on teams with losing records. The last time a running back led in yards-from-scrimmage average while playing for a non-playoff team was Josh Jacobs with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022.

Among this year’s top five running backs by scrimmage yards—Robinson, McCaffrey, Jonathan Taylor (Indianapolis Colts), James Cook (Buffalo Bills), and Jahmyr Gibbs (Detroit Lions)—Robinson is alone in playing for a team with a losing record.

In games where the Falcons have lost this season, Robinson has still managed at least 80 scrimmage yards seven times—more than any other player facing similar circumstances. Only De’Von Achene of the Miami Dolphins comes close, achieving that mark five times for his team.

Robinson also reached a rare statistical milestone last Sunday against the New York Jets: over the past fifteen seasons, only two players have recorded at least 140 rushing yards, 50 receiving yards, and five catches in a loss—a feat Robinson achieved during that game.

Despite Atlanta’s disappointing season results so far, Robinson continues to be recognized for his individual contributions on the field.
