Clayton County officials announced on April 24 that the General Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, May 19, with advanced voting available from Monday, April 27 to Friday, May 15. Residents can review a sample ballot by visiting the Clayton County Elections and Registration webpage.
The county outlined several options for early voting. Locations will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Advanced voting sites include the Election & Registration Office in Jonesboro, Carl Rhodenizer Recreation Center in Rex, Forest Park Senior Center in Forest Park, Lake Spivey Recreation Center in Jonesboro, Morrow City Hall in Morrow, South Clayton Recreation Center in Hampton, Virginia Gray Recreation Center in Riverdale, Flint River Community Center in Riverdale, Sonna Gregory Senior Center in Ellenwood, Northwest Branch Library in Riverdale, and Headquarters Library in Jonesboro.
This election comes at a time when local schools have experienced changes. Enrollment at Clayton County schools decreased by about 2.5% during the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year according to the Georgia Department of Education. In total, Clayton County schools enrolled approximately 61,644 students during that period according to state data.
Demographic data shows that Black students made up the largest group within Clayton County schools at about 68% of enrollment during the same school year according to education reports. Hispanic students represented roughly one-quarter of students at about 24% according to state records, while multiracial students accounted for around three percent as reported by education authorities. White students were least represented among major ethnic groups at two percent of total enrollment based on Georgia Department of Education figures.
The upcoming primary is an opportunity for residents across these diverse communities to participate ahead of Election Day through various accessible early voting locations.
