Clayton County officials announced on May 4 the upcoming Youth Gun Violence Awareness Walk, scheduled for Saturday, June 13, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Gerald Matthews Sports Complex in Hampton. The event is organized by Commissioner Tashe’ Allen along with Youth Services and Parks & Recreation.
The walk aims to raise awareness about gun violence among youth and encourage community collaboration to address the issue. Organizers say participants are invited to arrive early for registration starting at 9:00 a.m., with a brief warm-up session set for 9:45 a.m. A community gathering featuring entertainment and life-saving resources will follow the walk.
Commissioner Tashe’ Allen said, “Let’s collaborate to raise awareness and stop gun violence in our community.”
The event comes as Clayton County schools reported an enrollment of 61,644 students during the 2022-23 school year, according to the Georgia Department of Education (source). This marked a decrease of 2.5% compared to the previous year (source). Demographic data show that Black students made up the largest group at county schools during this period at 68%, while Hispanic students accounted for 24%. Multiracial students comprised three percent of enrollment, and White students were two percent (source).
Those interested in partnering, vending or volunteering can contact district3@claytoncountyga.gov. Organizers hope that by bringing together residents and local organizations, they can foster dialogue and share resources aimed at reducing gun violence among youth.
Community leaders expect continued efforts like this walk will help bring attention to important safety issues facing young people in Clayton County.
