The Clayton County Board of Commissioners announced on May 26 that it will hold a Budget Hearing on Tuesday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m. The meeting is open to all interested citizens and will take place in the Commissioners’ Board Room at 112 Smith Street, Jonesboro, Georgia. The proposed fiscal year 2027 budget will be presented during this session.
The proposed budget document will be available for public review beginning June 2. Citizens can access the document online at www.claytoncountyga.gov or in person at several library locations: Headquarters Library at 856 Battle Creek Road in Jonesboro, Lovejoy Library at 1721 McDonough Road in Hampton, Morrow Library at 6225 Maddox Road in Morrow, and Riverdale Library at 420 Valley Hill Road SW in Jonesboro during regular hours. Written and oral comments from citizens are encouraged.
Enrollment figures for Clayton County schools provide additional context for the upcoming budget discussions. Enrollment dropped by 2.5% during the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year; total enrollment was reported as 61,644 students, according to the Georgia Department of Education. Black students made up the largest ethnic group with 68% of enrollment; Hispanic students accounted for 24%, multiracial students represented about 3%, and white students were approximately 2% of the student body, according to the Georgia Department of Education.
All interested citizens are encouraged to attend or participate by providing feedback regarding the proposed fiscal year budget.
