Clayton County marked its 167th anniversary on November 30, 2025. The county was established in 1858 and named after Judge Augustin Smith Clayton.

The area has developed into a diverse community within the Atlanta metropolitan region. Recent data shows that enrollment at Clayton County schools declined by 2.5% during the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year, according to the Georgia Department of Education (https://www.gadoe.org/). Despite this decrease, total enrollment for that period stood at 61,644 students (https://www.gadoe.org/).

Demographic figures indicate that white students were the least represented ethnic group in Clayton County schools, accounting for just 2% of the student population in the 2022-23 academic year (https://www.gadoe.org/).
