Clayton County opens warming centers as temperatures drop below freezing

Clayton County officials have announced that warming locations will remain open as the National Weather Service forecasts low temperatures and wind chills below freezing for Tuesday night. The overnight shelters are available to residents from 6:00 PM to 8:00 AM on February 24, 2026.

The designated warming centers include Anointed Vision of Hope at 8049 Webb Road in Riverdale, accessible via MARTA Bus Route #191, and the Clayton County Police Department Headquarters Media Room at 7911 North McDonough Street in Jonesboro, served by MARTA Bus Route #198.

Transportation assistance is being provided by Ujimay Way and Hearts To Nourish Hope. Residents needing transportation to the warming centers can text after 10:00 PM to coordinate pick-up.

Recent data from the Georgia Department of Education shows that enrollment in Clayton County schools declined by 2.5% during the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year (https://www.gadoe.org/). In total, there were 61,644 students enrolled during that period (https://www.gadoe.org/). Black students made up the largest portion of the student body at 68%, followed by Hispanic students at 24% (https://www.gadoe.org/). Multiracial students represented 3%, while White students accounted for just 2% of enrollment (https://www.gadoe.org/).
