Commissioner Gail Hambrick and the Parks and Recreation department announced on April 9 that they will host an Earth Day Celebration and Community Garden Opening on Saturday, April 25. The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Virginia Burton Gray Recreation Center in Riverdale.
The event aims to bring families together for activities such as arts and crafts, inflatables, music by a DJ, giveaways, and more. Attendees interested in gardening can register for a garden plot for $35, with applications available in person at the event. For further information about registration or activities, organizers encourage people to call the provided contact number.
The community event comes as Clayton County schools have seen changes in enrollment patterns recently. Enrollment dropped by 2.5% during the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year, according to the Georgia Department of Education. During that period, Clayton County schools enrolled a total of 61,644 students according to state data.
Demographic data show that Black students made up the largest portion of Clayton County’s student body at 68%, while Hispanic students represented about one quarter at 24%. Multiracial students were the third most represented group at three percent, while White students accounted for two percent of enrollment as reported by state education statistics.
Events like this celebration provide opportunities for residents from all backgrounds to come together outside school settings and participate in community life.
