The Atlanta Falcons announced on Apr. 10 that they have exercised the fifth-year option for running back Bijan Robinson, extending his contract through the 2027 season.
Robinson has been a key player for the Falcons since being selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He earned All-Pro honors after a standout 2025 season, setting a new franchise record with 2,298 scrimmage yards and leading all NFL players in that category last year. His performance included a notable 93-yard touchdown run in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Rams, which became the longest rushing touchdown in team history.
In his third season, Robinson recorded 1,478 rushing yards and added another 820 receiving yards over 366 touches. His average of 6.3 yards per touch tied historic seasons by O.J. Simpson and Marshall Faulk as one of the best ever among players who gained at least 2,000 scrimmage yards in a single year.
General manager Ian Cunningham said at NFL League Meetings, “He is one of the best players at his position, one of the best players in the league. I was excited that I had already had the chance to get to know him and start some dialogue with him.” Head coach Kevin Stefanski also praised Robinson’s impact both on and off the field: “There’s no shortage in what he can do for the football team on the field,” Stefanski said. “But also the person that he is off the field and what he brings to our locker room and to… culture… he’s a driver of that just because of how he attacks each day.”
Robinson joins other first-round picks Kyle Pitts, Drake London and Michael Penix Jr., forming an important part of Atlanta’s offense under offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Since entering professional football, Robinson leads all NFL players with 5,648 scrimmage yards—408 more than Derrick Henry—and has scored or contributed more first downs than any other player during this period.
Reflecting on his return to offseason workouts this week, Robinson said: “I am pretty excited, even just with how I feel… (these are) your prime years, but I really feel like this is the best I have felt my whole time being here.” The Falcons compete in National Football League’s NFC South division according to their official website.
The team began as an expansion franchise in Atlanta, Georgia in 1965 according to their official website. They advanced to Super Bowls twice—in both 1998 and again in 2016 according to their official website. Freddie The Falcon serves as their mascot according to their official website.
