A late rally by the Atlanta Falcons was not enough to overcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their season opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with the game ending 23-20 in favor of Tampa Bay.

The loss leaves the Falcons at 0-1 and behind in the NFC South after dropping a divisional matchup. The team’s defense, led by Jeff Ulbrich, made an impact early by forcing consecutive three-and-outs. This marked the first time since 2015 that Atlanta’s defense accomplished such a start in a season opener.

One key moment occurred late in the fourth quarter. With three minutes left and trailing 17-13, Atlanta faced fourth down at Tampa Bay’s two-yard line. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. ran toward the end zone; officials initially ruled it a fumble but reversed their decision on review, giving Atlanta a first down. Four plays later, Penix scored on a four-yard run to put the Falcons ahead 20-17.

That drive began deep in Falcons territory and lasted for 18 plays—Atlanta’s longest offensive drive since October 2020 and tied for most plays on a touchdown drive since December 2010. Wide receiver Drake London nearly caught a touchdown earlier in that series, but it was ruled incomplete after review.

Tampa Bay responded quickly as quarterback Baker Mayfield found Emeka Egbuka for a 25-yard touchdown pass on a five-play drive. A missed extra point kept Tampa Bay’s lead at three points.

Atlanta then moved into field goal range with less than a minute left, but kicker Younghoe Koo missed from 44 yards out, sealing the loss.

Divine Deablo stood out for Atlanta’s defense with six tackles, half a sack, and one pass breakup. All four defensive draft picks—Xavier Watts, Billy Bowman Jr., Jalon Walker, and James Pearce Jr.—made their debuts; Watts and Bowman started while Walker and Pearce came off the bench.

Several players reached personal milestones: Casey Washington recorded his first career start and his longest reception to date; Billy Bowman Jr. became the tenth Falcons rookie to register a sack in his debut; Xavier Watts defended two passes as only the third rookie Falcon to do so over the last 35 years; Bijan Robinson caught his second career receiving touchdown of at least 50 yards; Michael Penix Jr.’s completion to Robinson marked his career-longest pass.

Injuries affected Atlanta during the game. Jamal Agnew left early in the third quarter with a groin injury and did not return; Drake London exited late due to a shoulder injury.

Wide receiver Darnell Mooney was inactive due to ongoing recovery from an earlier shoulder injury sustained during training camp. Elijah Wilkinson started at right tackle for his tenth appearance with Atlanta.

Following this opening defeat, Atlanta will travel next week to play against Minnesota Vikings on September 14th at U.S. Bank Stadium with live coverage scheduled on NBC.

“Michael Penix Jr. said this preseason that the Falcons have the potential to be the greatest offense in the league. They have a long way to go to make that proclamation a reality,” said Tori McElhaney of the Falcons editorial staff.
“The Falcons showed flashes of what they can become, especially on defense, but there is work left to do,” added Will McFadden.
“IT’S ONLY WEEK 1,” commented Terrin Waack.
