Shortly after the Atlanta Falcons were announced to play the Indianapolis Colts in Berlin for the first regular-season NFL game in Germany, running back Bijan Robinson traveled to the city. At that time, his absence from practice raised concerns with head coach Raheem Morris. However, Morris reconsidered due to the league’s efforts to expand its international presence.
“Then I said, ‘No. You know what? We need to share Bijan,'” Morris stated. “Give Bijan the chance to be out here and be around your children, be around your kids, be around your people, be around your families, I think that is outstanding.”
Now in Week 10 of the NFL season, Robinson has returned to Berlin with his teammates and coaches. He expressed enthusiasm about experiencing Germany alongside them and building connections with local fans.
“I can really feel the support,” Robinson said in an interview with Falcons Germany writer Fabienne Lampe during his summer trip. “I’ve already met some fans from Germany, and they’re absolutely crazy. I love feeling the energy of the German fans, especially when they’re with us in the USA. I can only imagine what it will be like when they cheer us on here in Germany, their home country. Some of my teammates were in Germany a few years ago, and they said the fans were incredibly supportive. I want to experience all of that, and I’m really looking forward to it in November.”
Ahead of Friday’s practice in Berlin and speaking before local and international media members, Morris was asked how he would persuade new NFL fans to support the Falcons.
“I think it’s the guys on the football team,” Morris responded. “I hate to say it’s something that I am going to say — when you talk about guys like Bijan Robinson and the type of character he has and how he displays his everyday rhythm and routine — those are the things the fans should really relate to.”
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr., responding similarly when asked why new fans should follow Atlanta’s team, simply said: “Watch No. 7.”
Morris added that Robinson represents a gateway for new supporters: “With the character of our football team,” he said, “and then it is our job to go out there and deliver on the field and make them our fan.”
Despite efforts off-field, Atlanta enters this international matchup amid a three-game losing streak. Former quarterback Matt Ryan once remarked that Atlanta supports teams fully if they earn it—a sentiment echoed regarding potential international followers who expect strong performances as well as wins.
Robinson continues to impress with his playmaking abilities; however, continued success on-field will be crucial for attracting lasting global support.
