After a recent win in New Orleans, the Atlanta Falcons lost momentum in Week 13 with a 27-24 defeat to the New York Jets. This loss has significantly reduced their chances of making the playoffs.
The Falcons’ only remaining route to postseason play is by winning the NFC South division. However, this path became more difficult after both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers secured victories in their respective games.
As of Week 13, the NFC South standings are as follows: Tampa Bay Buccaneers lead at 7-5 (2-0 in division), followed by the Carolina Panthers at 7-6 (2-1), Atlanta Falcons at 4-8 (1-3), and New Orleans Saints at 2-10 (1-2).
The Buccaneers recently won against the Arizona Cardinals, with left tackle Tristan Wirfs scoring a touchdown on a two-yard pass from Baker Mayfield and performing well as a blocker. Defensive tackle Vita Vea recorded five pressures and a sack but was less effective against the run than usual. The team’s passing game has struggled lately, averaging just 5.6 yards per attempt over four games—among the lowest in the league. Head coach Todd Bowles commented, “It’s playoff mode and it’s playoff time and we [have] to embrace the grind and embrace the pressure. We [have] to execute and make plays in those situations.” The Buccaneers will next host the New Orleans Saints.
The Carolina Panthers earned an impressive victory over the Los Angeles Rams, highlighted by quarterback Bryce Young’s performance—he posted a passer rating of 147.1 while completing three touchdown passes. Safety Lathan Ransom led defensively with strong run support, one sack, and eleven tackles in his first career start. The Panthers’ defense allowed significant yardage on early downs; opponents have averaged 4.7 yards per carry on first and second downs this season. Head coach Dave Canales said, “We needed that kind of challenge so that our guys could rise to the occasion, make plays, have a more balanced attack and be able to play the type of offensive football we know we’re capable of.” The Panthers have a bye next week.
For Atlanta, running back Bijan Robinson stood out offensively with 193 yards from scrimmage—the second-highest total of his career—including notable long gains both rushing and receiving. Rookie edge rusher James Pearce Jr. continued his streak with at least one sack for four consecutive games; he now shares five sacks this season among rookies alongside teammate Jalon Walker. Special teams errors contributed heavily to Atlanta’s loss: there was a muffed punt by Jamal Agnew and an allowed kickoff return for eighty-three yards starting off the fourth quarter. Head coach Raheem Morris stated, “Obviously, we didn’t play in our favor today. Gave ourselves a chance to win. We played well on two phases, didn’t play well on another phase, and you’ve got to play all three phases of the football game to win football games, and we did not today.” The Falcons will face Seattle Seahawks next week.
The New Orleans Saints lost narrowly against Miami Dolphins despite wide receiver Devaughn Vele catching all four targets for ninety-three yards including a late touchdown reception—the best performance so far in his career—and defensive end Cam Jordan recording two sacks at age thirty-six along with other key defensive plays during limited snaps. The Saints have held leads infrequently this season; they trailed early against Miami before attempting an unsuccessful comeback effort after halftime deficit without points scored initially.
Head coach Kellen Moore reflected: “Every game has things we can take from it, both good and bad…I thought our guys responded in all three phases.” Next up for New Orleans is an away game versus Tampa Bay.
