The Atlanta Falcons announced on Apr. 17 several key offseason developments, including the signing of offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor and the decision to pick up running back Bijan Robinson’s fifth-year option. These moves come as the team continues preparations for the upcoming NFL Draft.
These roster changes are important as they signal the team’s direction heading into a new season. The addition of Taylor follows Kaleb McGary’s retirement, while retaining Robinson reflects confidence in his performance and value to the organization.
Ian Cunningham said, “He is one of the best players at his position, one of the best players in the league. I was excited that I had already had the chance to get to know him and start some dialogue with him.” Head coach Kevin Stefanski also commented on Robinson: “There’s no shortage in what he can do for the football team on the field. But also the person that he is off the field and what he brings to our locker room… he’s a driver of that just because of how he attacks each day.” Brian Robinson Jr., who joined Atlanta earlier this year, will share duties with Bijan Robinson in an effort to balance their offense. Stefanski said about Brian Robinson Jr., “A really talented football player who I think matches exceptionally with what we want to do with him and Bijan… We want to have an attack that’s not just a one-person attack. You have to be balanced in this league. I think Brian gives us an opportunity to do that.”
Bijan Robinson described their complementary styles: “I’m not one to truck you all the time… He brings, kind of similar to Tyler, when they’re in the game, they just bring a presence… they’ll run through you. They’ll find a quarter, they’ll run through your face.” As Will McFadden wrote, combining different running backs has worked well for Atlanta before; now coaches expect similar results from pairing both Robinsons.
There is currently a quarterback competition between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa as training camp approaches later this year. Stefanski said evaluations are ongoing: “So much of their jobs and their evaluation is going to be on a day-to-day basis… There’s going to be a lot of building foundational knowledge for them throughout this offseason.” He advised his quarterbacks: “It’s about being where your feet are,” emphasizing focus during preparation.
The Falcons compete in the National Football League’s NFC South division according to their official website. The team began as an expansion franchise in 1965 according to its official website and is based in Atlanta, Georgia according to its official website. The Falcons advanced twice to Super Bowls—in 1998 and again in 2016 according to its official site. Freddie the Falcon serves as mascot for Atlanta as noted by its official site.
With seven days until this year’s draft begins, attention remains focused on potential additions at wide receiver or cornerback positions as discussed by analysts Tori McElhaney and Will McFadden.
