The Atlanta Falcons secured a comeback victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night in Tampa, despite having already been eliminated from playoff contention earlier in the week following a loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Entering the game with no postseason hopes, the Falcons trailed by 14 points with just over 13 minutes left and faced long odds, with only a 4.8% chance of winning at that point according to Next Gen Stats.

The team struggled with discipline throughout the game, committing a franchise-high 19 penalties for 125 yards and handing seven first downs to the Buccaneers via penalties. Despite these setbacks, players and coaches described a sense of unity and determination within the squad.

“We knew that at this point,” tight end Kyle Pitts said, “we’re just playing for each other.”

Head coach Raheem Morris praised his team’s resilience after the win. “These guys, they’re fighters, man,” Morris said postgame. “… Went out there and was able to execute. Got down early. Watched the guys go out there and fight, overcome a couple dropped passes and overcome a couple things, overcome a couple touchdowns.”

Statistically, Atlanta outperformed Tampa Bay by gaining 476 yards compared to the Buccaneers’ 338 and averaging 7.2 yards per play. The Falcons also converted all four of their red zone opportunities.

Kyle Pitts delivered an historic performance as he became only the fourth tight end in NFL history to record at least ten catches, over 150 receiving yards, and three or more receiving touchdowns in one game—the last player to achieve this was Shannon Sharpe in 1996.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins continued his strong performances against Tampa Bay; over two seasons he has thrown for 1,158 passing yards and notched three wins versus the Buccaneers—both figures are tops among quarterbacks facing any single opponent during that span. His eleven touchdown passes against Tampa Bay are tied for most against any opponent since last season.

Running back Bijan Robinson extended his own franchise record by surpassing 100 scrimmage yards in his ninth consecutive divisional game.

Key moments came from both established stars and less heralded contributors. David Sills V redeemed himself after dropping an earlier touchdown pass by making a crucial fourth-down catch late in the game that set up Atlanta’s field goal attempt as time expired. Darnell Mooney’s fumble recovery effort was aided by center Ryan Neuzel fighting through defenders to keep Atlanta’s drive alive during their comeback push.

“When we were down 14, it was really cool to see the sideline,” Robinson explained. He described how teammate Chris Lindstrom energized players on offense while defense took the field: “He was screaming…that the Falcons were going to go win that game.” Robinson added: “It’s that leadership that it takes for all of us…because when we do it the right way—like that—we know nothing can stop us.”

Coach Morris called attention to what this win could mean for next season: “It’s a stepping stone to where we want to go…We got a lot of right things that we like…and it’s our job to go out there and prove to our fans that we can do it. Only thing we can do right now is finish.”
