Atlanta Falcons starting right tackle Kaleb McGary was taken off the field on a cart during Wednesday’s practice in Flowery Branch, Georgia. The injury appeared to affect his lower leg. Teammates gathered around McGary before he left the field.
The team has not yet provided details about the severity of McGary’s injury. Elijah Wilkinson replaced him at right tackle for the remainder of practice. Wilkinson had previously played at left tackle and left guard during preseason games.
After practice, a team spokesperson said, “Kaleb McGary was carted off, is receiving an MRI and we’ll have an update at the appropriate time.”
McGary recently signed a contract extension that keeps him with Atlanta through 2027, helping maintain continuity on the offensive line. He was expected to play a key role protecting quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
The Falcons’ depth at tackle is currently limited. Backup swing tackle Storm Norton has missed most of training camp due to a lower-body injury. Head coach Raheem Morris stated earlier this week that Norton would likely remain unavailable for both practices and Friday’s final preseason game in Dallas. ESPN’s Adam Schefter later reported that Norton had ankle surgery and will be out for six to eight weeks (https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/38397413/falcons-tackle-storm-norton-ankle-surgery-miss-6-8-weeks).
