The Atlanta Falcons secured their first NFC South victory of the season in Week 12, defeating the New Orleans Saints 24-10. This win marked a shift for the Falcons, who have struggled within their division so far this year.

Following the weekend’s games, the NFC South standings are as follows: Tampa Bay Buccaneers lead at 6-5 (2-0 in division), Carolina Panthers are at 6-6 (2-1), Atlanta Falcons sit at 4-7 (1-3), and New Orleans Saints trail at 2-9 (1-2).

In their last game, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Los Angeles Rams 34-7. Running back Rachaad White was effective with limited carries, averaging 5.4 yards per attempt. Linebacker Yaya Diaby recorded three pressures and a sack despite the team’s defensive struggles, particularly against the pass. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles commented on his team’s performance: “We’re pissed off. We got a bad taste in our mouth the last two weeks and we should be. We come home with a three-game home stand. Everything we need to do is right in front of us, but we have a lot of work to do.” The Buccaneers will host the Arizona Cardinals next.

The Carolina Panthers fell to the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 20-9. Running back Rico Dowdle led offensively with efficient rushing and receiving yards, while cornerback Jaycee Horn had two interceptions before leaving with a concussion. The Panthers’ pass rush remains an area needing improvement as they rank last in sacks this season. Head coach Dave Canales said: “Yeah, it’s just fundamentals. Fundamentals, execution, you know, it’s the little things. It’s making the completions, it’s the right throw, it’s catching the ball, doing all the little things right that I can count on these guys to do and making sure that shows up weekly.” The Panthers face the Los Angeles Rams next week.

For Atlanta, quarterback Kirk Cousins led an efficient offense against New Orleans with a 70% completion rate for 199 yards and two touchdowns alongside one interception in his first start after Michael Penix Jr.’s injury. Cornerback Dee Alford stepped up defensively following Billy Bowman Jr.’s Achilles injury by recording ten tackles, defending one pass and recovering a fumble. Special teams remain an issue for Atlanta after allowing a significant kickoff return early in Sunday’s game. Falcons head coach Raheem Morris stated: “Obviously sacks and pressures have been a big focus on our team … Over the last two years, since I’ve been here at least, being able to add people (in the draft) and free agency, whatever the case has been for me to get them in here, to rush the passer.” The Falcons will play away against the New York Jets next.

The Saints’ loss was highlighted by wide receiver Chris Olave’s nine catches for 70 yards from thirteen targets while defensive end Cam Jordan notched both a sack and forced fumble. Red-zone efficiency continues to trouble New Orleans; they managed only three points from two trips inside Atlanta’s one-yard line. Saints head coach Kellen Moore reflected: “Frustrating game, a game we felt good about coming in. We felt like there was some carryover from the Carolina game into the bye week. We felt like it was a good week. Then, we didn’t come out and get this one done. Credit to those guys. Those guys coached better, played better and ultimately executed better than us today.” The Saints will travel to play Miami Dolphins next Sunday.
