A recent private workout solidified the Atlanta Falcons’ decision to draft Jalon Walker in the 2025 NFL Draft. The event, held at the University of Georgia’s indoor facility, was attended by a group of ten key decision-makers from the Falcons organization. This gathering provided an opportunity for the team to evaluate Walker’s physical abilities up close.
Jacquies Smith, the Falcons’ outside linebackers coach, had been aware of Walker’s potential long before meeting him at the NFL Scouting Combine. “Obviously, Jalon has been a talented player throughout the landscape of college football for a while,” Smith said. He noted Walker’s poise and character, influenced by his father’s coaching background.
The workout included drills that allowed the Falcons to assess Walker’s capabilities as both a pass rusher and in coverage. Shepley Heard, an area scout for the Falcons, emphasized the importance of seeing Walker perform live: “We wanted to see him move around… do some pass rush stuff.”
The performance left a lasting impression on those present. “I think everybody walked away going, ‘Wow,'” Heard remarked. Smith added that witnessing Walker’s explosive traits firsthand reinforced their positive view: “We got to see him up close and personal… that was a chance for him to make his lasting impression right before the draft.”
Heard described Walker as a “culture changer” with leadership qualities that extend beyond just example-setting: “His leadership is so good… he has it all.” These attributes made it clear to the Falcons that passing on Walker at pick No. 15 would be difficult.
Ultimately, when faced with selecting at No. 15 during draft night, Atlanta chose not to hesitate in drafting Walker. Heard concluded confidently: “Jalon is a grand slam for us.”
