The National Center for Education Statistics reported that Georgia’s public school population included approximately 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander students.
Chronic absenteeism continues to concern educators in Georgia, as 20.7% of students missed 10% or more school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. GaDOE rolled out a statewide effort—launching a real-time attendance dashboard, awareness campaigns, and added support for high-need districts—to address daily attendance needs.
In 2025, Georgia legislators amended school attendance statutes to prohibit expulsion for absenteeism alone. New rules also bring about tougher reporting obligations and align procedures with alternative diploma options for students.
By 2026, Georgia reported an average student-to-teacher ratio of around 14:1, outperforming the nationwide ratio of 15:1.
