State Representatives Kim Schofield, Viola Davis, and Sandra Scott have publicly criticized Georgia’s abortion law following the case of Adriana Smith. Smith, a young Black woman, has been declared brain dead but remains on life support due to her pregnancy.

“This is not healthcare. This is sanctioned cruelty,” stated Rep. Schofield. She expressed that Smith’s family is enduring significant emotional distress as they are unable to say goodbye due to the current legal framework. Schofield described the situation as “barbaric” and emphasized the need for change.

Rep. Davis highlighted the importance of making critical healthcare decisions between medical professionals, patients, and their families without political interference. “Politics has no place in the exam room,” she asserted, noting that Georgia’s law undermines medical judgment and traumatizes grieving families.

Rep. Scott also voiced her concerns, stating that “Georgia’s law failed Adriana.” She stressed that it will continue to fail others unless immediate action is taken.

The representatives collectively called for legislative measures to repeal the state’s abortion law and restore medical freedom. They aim to prevent other families from facing similar challenges as those encountered by Smith’s family.
