State Representatives Viola Davis, Kim Schofield, and Sandra Scott have sent a letter to the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association condemning its decision to seek attorney’s fees from Judge Glenda Hatchett. The representatives expressed concern over the association’s actions and called for immediate changes.
“This is not just a legal matter; it is a moral one,” said Rep. Davis. “We stand with the 11 sheriffs who are upholding the highest ideals of law enforcement by protecting the vulnerable and speaking out for justice.”
“No survivor should be punished for seeking justice, especially when the offender holds a position of authority,” said Rep. Schofield. “The Sheriffs’ Association must correct this immediately.”
“We call on the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association to withdraw this harmful claim and publicly reaffirm its commitment to survivors of sexual violence,” said Rep. Scott.
In their letter, Davis, Schofield, and Scott asked the association to withdraw its claim for attorney’s fees, issue a public statement supporting survivors of sexual violence, and adopt policies that prevent future actions that could punish victims seeking justice. They also commended 11 Georgia sheriffs who have opposed the association’s actions.
The letter states that pursuing attorney’s fees against Judge Hatchett does not align with principles of justice and accountability. The representatives pledged ongoing work with survivors, advocacy groups, and law enforcement leaders dedicated to victim protection and accountability.
Rep. Jon G. Burns has served as a Republican member of the Georgia State House since 2005, representing District 159 after succeeding Ray Holland.
A copy of the representatives’ letter has been provided to the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association.
