Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski said on March 30 that the team’s quarterback position will be open to competition as the franchise prepares for the upcoming season.
The decision comes after Atlanta signed Tua Tagovailoa, who was released by the Miami Dolphins earlier this month. The move is intended to provide depth at quarterback while Michael Penix Jr. continues his recovery from a knee injury suffered last season. Penix underwent surgery in November and is still rehabbing.
Speaking at the Annual League Meetings in Phoenix, Stefanski discussed how Tagovailoa fits into the team’s plans. “I think he fits in a bunch of different ways,” Stefanski said of Tagovailoa. “He’s a culture fit, a personal fit. I think it’s a scheme fit. I think he has had great success in this league when doing a lot of things that we believe in. I think, like what he’s talked about, he’s looking for an opportunity, and we can provide that opportunity.” He added that bringing competition across all positions has been part of the leadership’s strategy since day one: “It’s something Ian believes in, I believe in, Matt believes in. That only makes all of us better at every position.”
Stefanski acknowledged that Tagovailoa sees Atlanta as an opportunity for a fresh start following challenging seasons with Miami: “For Tua, this is a new opportunity for him, and for me. You get to put your best foot forward in these types of situations.” Regarding Penix’s status, Stefanski said his main focus remains on getting healthy: “But we’re not going to rush him, and he’s not going to rush himself.” When asked if Penix would be ready for Week 1 of the upcoming season, Stefanski responded it was too soon to say definitively due to varying recovery timelines.
As offseason programs begin next week under new leadership and coaching staff changes within the organization, coaches plan to monitor players’ progress closely—especially those recovering from injuries like Penix.
The Atlanta Falcons compete in the National Football League’s NFC South division according to their official website. The team began as an expansion franchise in 1965 and is based in Atlanta, Georgia according to their official website. They have advanced twice to the Super Bowl—in 1998 and again in 2016 according to their official website. Freddie the Falcon serves as their mascot according to their official website.
Looking ahead at how playing time might be split between Tagovailoa and Penix once both are healthy enough for full participation remains uncertain until more information about Penix’s rehabilitation timeline emerges. As Stefanski explained: “It will be a competition but I can’t tell you exactly what it will look like until Michael gets healthy… But the quarterback position — like all of our other positions — will be a competition, yes.”
