During the 2024-25 school year, Lake City Elementary School registered 9 white students, maintaining the same number as the previous year, according to the Georgia Department of Education reports.

Records revealed that the school’s total enrollment reached 467 students in 2024-25. White students accounted for 2% of the population, making them the school’s smallest demographic group.

Lake City Elementary is part of the Clayton County School District, which has its central office in Jonesboro.

Out of 65 facilities in the Clayton County School District, Jonesboro High School had the largest white student enrollment for 2024-25, counting 47 white students.

Statewide, more than 1.7 million students attended Georgia’s public schools, the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report stated. The majority were in elementary grades with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by middle grades at 388,733 (22.7%), and high school with 539,092 (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism continues to be a challenge in Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. The department launched a statewide initiative that includes introducing a real-time attendance dashboard, starting a public awareness campaign, and providing additional support to high-need districts to improve attendance.

For 2025, Georgia lawmakers enacted changes to school attendance laws to prohibit expulsions solely due to absenteeism. The legislation also introduces added reporting rules and is coordinated with programs designed to help students earn high school diplomas through alternate pathways.

By 2026, Georgia reported an average student-teacher ratio of about 14:1, surpassing the national average of 15:1.
