State Representatives Eric Bell and Derrick Jackson, along with State Senator Kenya Wicks, have announced a press conference to voice their opposition to the planned deployment of the Georgia National Guard in support of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. The event is scheduled for Friday, September 5, 2025, at 3 p.m. on the South Wing Steps of the Georgia State Capitol.

The lawmakers, all Democrats and military veterans, intend to discuss the consequences of sending state guard troops to assist federal immigration authorities. They will also advocate for alternative approaches that focus on community-based solutions for issues facing Georgia.

“These lawmakers, who are U.S. military veterans, will discuss the implications of deploying the Georgia National Guard and emphasize the need for thoughtful, community centered solutions to address Georgia’s challenges. Together, they seek to highlight their shared perspective as veterans and public servants with the goal of protecting both the security and civil liberties of Georgians.”

Representatives Bell (D-Jonesboro), Jackson (D-Tyrone), and Senator Wicks (D-Fayette) will participate in the press conference at 206 Washington Street S.W., Atlanta.

A flyer with more information has been made available by the representatives.

Jon G. Burns was elected as a Republican representative to Georgia’s 159th House District in 2005, succeeding Ray Holland.
