Following the COVID-19 pandemic, chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more of school days in 2024, based on Georgia Department of Education findings. In response, GaDOE introduced a statewide strategy that features a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign, and additional support for districts with high absentee rates to encourage daily attendance.

Georgia legislators approved a bill in 2025 to update school attendance rules, prohibiting expulsions solely for absenteeism. The new law adds expanded reporting rules and streamlines opportunities for students to earn diplomas through alternative programs. Read more at this link.
