Reports from the Georgia Department of Education state that chronic absenteeism has persisted in state schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024. To address this, GaDOE initiated a statewide strategy featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, widespread public campaigns, and focused support for districts with elevated needs to boost daily attendance rates.
A bill approved by Georgia lawmakers in 2025 updated attendance laws, now banning expulsion for absenteeism alone and adding new data-reporting measures, as well as integrating programs to help students obtain diplomas through alternative pathways.
By 2026, the average student-to-teacher ratio in Georgia reached about 14:1, which is better than the U.S. average of 15:1.
