After being selected as the No. 8 pick in the 2024 Draft, Michael Penix Jr. is set to begin his first season as an NFL starting quarterback with the Atlanta Falcons. The role brings new pressure, even for a player with his college accomplishments.
Michael Vick, who was chosen by the Falcons as the No. 1 overall pick in 2000, understands Penix’s situation well. Vick and Penix recently had a conversation before training camp, discussing several topics relevant to Falcons fans, including Penix’s goals for the team in 2025.
“Postseason. Got to get into the postseason,” said Penix. “Seeing the Dirty Bird Nest and all the little highlights and fans. Man, they get rocking whenever we winning. So, I definitely want to get back to that.”
Penix started three games last season with a record of 1-2 but led an offense that ranked sixth in scoring during those games. His focus this offseason is on building chemistry with teammates and mastering the offense.
Vick asked about Penix’s leadership style directly during their discussion. “I’m not always that big vocal guy,” Penix explained. “I want to get to know my teammates because then you know how to lead those guys.”
The Falcons have talented players like Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier at running back, Drake London and Darnell Mooney at receiver, and Kyle Pitts at tight end. Building trust among these players is crucial for Atlanta’s offensive success.
Penix emphasized simplicity on the field: “Once you get on the field, it’s still just football,” he said.
Last season, he threw three interceptions but showed promise late in the year with impressive passing statistics from Weeks 16-18.
A unique aspect of Atlanta’s offense under Penix is having a left-handed quarterback—a trait shared with Vick when he played for the team.
“Being a left-handed quarterback… sometimes my coaches would hold back a little bit,” Vick told Penix during their talk.
Penix responded confidently: “Man… I can do it… I feel like I throw better rolling to right.”
