Chronic absenteeism continues to be a significant challenge in Georgia since the pandemic, with 20.7% of students absent for at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. To address this, the department rolled out a statewide effort featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public outreach campaign, and specific district-level assistance to improve attendance rates.
Georgia legislators in 2025 approved a law updating school attendance policies by prohibiting expulsion solely due to absenteeism. The legislation also put in place new data reporting requirements and coordinated with programs to help students pursue diplomas through additional routes. See more at the Georgia General Assembly.
In 2026, Georgia reported an average student-teacher ratio of about 14:1, compared to the national average of 15:1.
