As reported by the National Center for Education Statistics, the percentages of public school students in Georgia by race include: 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander.

Chronic absenteeism has remained a persistent concern for Georgia schools in the post-pandemic period, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more school days in 2024, Georgia Department of Education figures indicate. The agency has responded by introducing a statewide initiative, including a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign and added support for school districts with high need to encourage daily attendance. Georgia lawmakers approved legislation in 2025 amending school attendance rules to prohibit expulsion solely for absenteeism. The new law introduces further reporting requirements and coordinates with alternative diploma pathway programs. Details are available here.

By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, which is better than the national ratio of 15:1.
