River’s Edge Elementary School recorded an enrollment of 515 African American students in the 2024-25 school year, reflecting a 4.3% drop from the prior year, according to data from the Georgia Department of Education.

The school’s total enrollment reached 621 students in the 2024-25 school year. African American students represented 83% of this total, making up the largest demographic group at River’s Edge.

Located in the Clayton County School District, the school falls under the central office jurisdiction in Jonesboro.

Of Clayton County School District’s 65 schools, Lovejoy High School reported the greatest number of African American students enrolled for 2024-25, with a total of 1,614 students.

Georgia’s public school system enrolled over 1.7 million students, based on the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 figures. Elementary students made up the largest share, at 787,206 (45.9%), while middle school enrollment was 388,733 (22.7%) and high school was 539,092 (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism has persisted post-pandemic, as 20.7% of Georgia students missed 10% or more school days in 2024, per the Georgia Department of Education. In response, the GaDOE introduced a statewide attendance initiative with components such as a real-time dashboard, public awareness efforts, and targeted district support to reduce missed days.

In 2025, Georgia’s legislature approved changes to school attendance laws, prohibiting expulsion based solely on absenteeism. The new rules also increased reporting obligations and expanded alternative graduation paths for students.

By 2026, Georgia maintained an average student-to-teacher ratio near 14:1, an improvement over the national ratio of 15:1.
