Chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students absent for 10% or more school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. In response, the agency introduced a statewide initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, public awareness efforts and targeted support for districts most affected to improve daily attendance.

In 2025, Georgia lawmakers updated state attendance laws to prohibit expelling students solely for absenteeism. The law also introduced new reporting demands and supports diploma completion through alternative programs.

By 2026, Georgia’s student-teacher ratio averaged about 14:1, lower than the national average of 15:1.
