Fulton Holds 61st Annual Spelling Bee; Goes Into Overtime

Abbotts Hill Elementary School issued the following announcement on Feb. 14.

Fulton County Schools held its 61st Annual Spelling Bee with participants from middle and elementary schools throughout the district. Seventy-eight students participated, ranging from grades 4-8.

The students were sent a list of spelling words, study lists, and meaning words in preparation for the spelling competition, which included a vocabulary round. Many spellers also practiced language of origin and parts of speech to help them prepare.

Aryan Batchu, Spelling Bee champion from River Trail Middle School said, “It feels pretty good to be champion. I prepared by studying a bunch of word lists and I was reading for hours and hours.”

The 2022 Spelling Bee Finalists included:

Carter Miree - Heards Ferry ES

Bilkis Hyder - Northwestern MS

Arnav Raj - New Prospect ES

Polina Bashkirova - Alpharetta ES

Samika Jambulingham - Crabapple Crossing ES

Shennell Gallimore - Lake Forest ES

Kelly Webb, Fulton County Schools director of English Language Arts Grades 6-12 adds, “We actually had to had to have a spell off to find our finalist. The Spelling Bee was very competitive this year and we’re very proud of all the spellers that made it this far. We are cheering on our top seven finalists to the next level.”

This year’s Spelling Bee went 13 rounds before a finalist was selected..
