There is a lot of erroneous information floating around on social media about the incident where a dog was shot by Spalding County Marshal Smart Webb earlier this week. I want to clarify a few things so there will be transparency on behalf of my agency: The Spalding County Marshal is separate from the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office. The Marshal does not report to me, nor does Code Enforcement, or Animal Control. He is not supervised by me, or anyone at the Sheriff’s Office. He is sworn in by me so he will have arrest powers. Other than that, he is just like any other department head employed by the county, none of which fall under my span of control as Sheriff.
With that being said, the Spalding County Sheriff (me) did not send anyone out to the residence where the incident occurred about goats, dogs, or anything. I have not made any statement or statements about the incident until right now; nor have I or anyone employed by me said that the dog was a Pitbull as has been claimed.
What I did do on the day this occurred was respond a Crime Scene Investigator and a one of my Criminal Investigators to the scene to photograph and gather facts. The fact gathering process by my Investigators is still in progress right now. To be clear, no one is alleging anything at this moment because facts are still being gathered.
The stories being spread about this particular incident is the exact same thing that you saw with the suicide at Ingles Sunday. Stories were spread that people saw men with guns run up and kill the guy, saw two men fighting at the gas pumps and one shot the other, saw an officer shoot the man, saw officers and the man engaged in a huge gunfight with bullets flying everywhere, the man shot a woman then shot himself, and many other “facts” and "stories" that people claim to have seen themselves, or they know someone who saw it. None of that was true in the least bit.
My request is that if you have questions, don’t turn to Facebook for facts or answers. If you need legal help contact a licensed Attorney. If you have questions about the actions of my agency or one of my employees, pick up the phone and call me or one of my administrators. Do not rely on alleged facts or stories on Facebook. Please wait until all the facts are known and stories verified before reaching any conclusions. Thanks!
