Media Advisory - Father and Daughter Dies in a Murder-Suicide Shooting
On November 24, 2022 at 9:35 p.m., Clayton County Police Officers were asked by Henry County Police Department to perform a welfare check, in our Sector 2 district, involving the kidnapping of two juveniles from the result of a domestic dispute from their jurisdiction. Officers did not make contact with anyone at that location.
Jonesboro Police Department located the vehicle and requested assistance from the Clayton County Police Department. A vehicle pursuit occurred where the suspect, Lionel Edwards lead the officers into a cul-de-sac in the 8000 block of South Bay Court, Riverdale, GA.
As officers approached the vehicle on foot, the suspect, Lionel Edwards takes off, hits a bush which forces the vehicle to stop. Officers then heard multiple shot coming from inside the vehicle. Officers rushed to the vehicle to find a juvenile in the passenger seat shot multiple times. Officers attempted life-saving measure with no success. Unfortunately, the juvenile succumbed to her injuries. The suspect, Lionel Edwards, suffered one self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mr. Edwards was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
