Sgt. Marc McIntyre, a deputy from Spalding County, was tragically killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic call in Griffin. U.S. Representative Drew Ferguson (R-GA) extended his condolences following Sgt. McIntyre's untimely demise, acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice he made.

Representative Ferguson stated, "Our community mourns the tragic loss of Sgt. Marc McIntyre - a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice." He further added, "My prayers are with his loved ones, and the entire Spalding County community."

As reported by Fox 5, the fatal shooting took place during a welfare check at a residence on Deason Street in Griffin. Sheriff Darrell Dix identified the shooter as Todd Lamont Harper, who was apprehended after a SWAT standoff and is known to suffer from mental health issues. Harper resisted arrest for several hours before being removed from the home. During this incident, McIntyre sustained a gunshot wound to his head. Another deputy took cover and returned fire while subsequent officers arrived and transported McIntyre for emergency medical care; however, he later succumbed to his critical head injury. Harper is currently detained at the Spalding County Jail.

Fox 5 also noted that McIntyre held a supervisory role in the patrol division and was part of the SWAT team. His career included military service in the U.S. Army and work in New York prior to his tenure in law enforcement. Known for his supportive and guiding nature within the Sheriff's Office, McIntyre had been recognized for saving a life using Narcan.

In an interview with 11 Alive, Dix said: "I have an entire shift of deputies who work with this supervisor who are absolutely devastated. He would call your name across the parking lot just to say hey to you. He lit up a room when he walked in; he had a command presence about him, and the people that worked with him on his shift, they loved him."

According to Fox 5, this incident is the fifth officer fatality in Georgia in 2023, the fifth deputy loss in Spalding County since 1980, and the 104th officer-involved shooting in the state this year.
