The Falcons completed their first stretch of training camp practices in full pads, providing a clearer picture of the team's preparation as the season approaches.

Atlanta's second four-day block culminated in an open practice at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with fans in attendance. The team will next head to Miami for joint practices against the Dolphins ahead of their preseason matchup on Aug. 9.

These joint practices and the ensuing game will further clarify how the 53-man roster could come together. Until then, here are some key takeaways from the first week in pads.

Big names shine in front of fans

In their return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, several key players performed well. Grady Jarrett received significant applause and continues to progress from last year's ACL injury. Younghoe Koo made multiple kicks from over 50 yards, including a 57-yarder, surpassing his career long of 54 yards. Both offensive and defensive lines had a back-and-forth battle.

Kirk Cousins looked comfortable and connected with his receivers during his first appearance at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He missed only a few passes and appeared fine after being knocked to the turf for the first time since rehab.

How camp battles are shaping up

With pads on, camp battles have intensified. Depth is a priority for the coaching staff, leading to difficult decisions at key positions. Initially, Nate Landman and Mike Hughes seemed set for No. 2 inside linebacker and cornerback spots respectively. However, Troy Andersen and Clark Phillips III have also shown strong performances.

Atlanta has experimented with various looks on its defensive line involving Jarrett, David Onyemata, Eddie Goldman, Zach Harrison, Ta'Quon Graham, Kentavius Street, and Demone Harris.

A different group of pass catchers

Falcons receivers coach Ike Hilliard emphasized bringing speed around Drake London due to him being the only player under contract following the 2023 season. This speed has been evident through eight practices featuring physical drills between pass-catchers and defensive backs.

Drake London developing chemistry with Cousins

During Friday's practice at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Kirk Cousins and Drake London showcased their developing connection with several deep sideline passes resulting in crowd cheers.

Bralen Trice is beginning to break through

Rookie pass rusher Bralen Trice stated: "I just got thrown out there... I'm ready." Trice has impressed as a potential starter so far in camp after leading all FBS players in total pressures over the last two seasons.

The main reason for optimism this season

Falcons owner Arthur Blank and general manager Terry Fontenot expressed renewed optimism about the team based on Kirk Cousins' performance with Michael Penix also showing promise as a backup quarterback.

James Smith-Williams role coming into focus

James Smith-Williams has been included with the starting defense each practice. His role involves playing on the edge in early down packages while reducing inside on certain third-down looks.

Selling out for the season ahead

The Falcons announced they have sold out of season tickets for 2024 highlighting renewed fan enthusiasm. Falcons president Greg Beadles said: "We've listened to our fans... It is evident there is a lot of great energy heading into the season."
