FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — During Wednesday's practice, it was evident that Drake London stood out as Kirk Cousins' preferred target.
London's standout performance in the 2024 training camp was highlighted by Cousins connecting with him six times on seven targets, often on deep routes down the right sideline. One notable moment included a one-handed reception where London's 6-foot-4 frame overshadowed the 5-foot-11 Natrone Brooks.
"He's been great at the catch point," Cousins said post-practice. "(He) takes pride in that and expects to catch difficult catches. He expects to bring it in, and he separates well."
Cousins further elaborated on London's abilities, noting his impressive separation despite being a big-body receiver. "When you add his size, visually and otherwise, (he's) a friendly target where you feel like he's covered but he's open because he gives you a bigger surface area to throw the football," Cousins explained, emphasizing London's untapped potential.
In the latest 11-on-11 session, London emerged as Cousins' most targeted and accurate receiver among six different pass-catchers.
Wednesday's practice saw an unusually fired-up London, contrasting with his typically cool-headed demeanor on the field. This followed Monday's session where London went 0-for-3 against tight coverage from defenders like Pro Bowl safety Jessie Bates III and cornerback Anthony Johnson, leading to visible frustration.
Cousins and London had an animated discussion post-Monday practice about route outcomes and perspectives from joint practices against the Miami Dolphins. Cousins noted that Monday's incompletions were not considered drops due to tight coverage but acknowledged London's self-critical nature.
Reflecting on Wednesday's performance, Cousins remarked, "Maybe he felt a chip on his shoulder (when he) came to practice today," adding that maintaining such motivation daily is essential for all players. "I would think it was just him coming out and being Drake London and having a good day."
