FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Raheem Morris often emphasizes role clarity for his players, aiming for each to understand and execute their responsibilities precisely.
Outside linebacker DeAngelo Malone exemplifies this principle. Although not the most prominent name on the Falcons’ 53-man roster, Malone has excelled as a key special teams player.
"You guys got a chance to see what DeAngelo means to this football team on every Friday and Saturday that he went out there and absolutely dominated the kicking phase in game," Morris said. "... He found a role in a niche and he made it that he was undeniable, that you had to find a way to keep him on the football team so he can continue to do that at a very high level."
Malone's contributions have secured his spot since being drafted in the third round in 2022. Last season, he played 78% of special teams snaps — more than any other Falcons player — without participating on defense.
"Every time I step out on the field, I just try to leave my mark. I just try to make a big play," Malone said. "Every time I step out there, I just (think), 'Man, what can I do to try to make this team?'"
Malone's primary goal is making the 53-man roster and contributing however possible. Despite making initial rosters each year, cut day remains stressful for him. He spent it waiting for the call, talking with his mother, and praying.
Faith and preseason efforts have been crucial for Malone. Preseason games offer opportunities for lesser-known players like him to showcase their talents while many starters rest.
"Personally, I love (preseason games)," Malone said. "I feel like it's a chance to showcase your talents and just be out there playing alongside your brothers."
In exhibition games, Malone was evaluated primarily on special teams performance by coaches and front office staff. Even when starting against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the final preseason game, he played 80% of special teams snaps. This preseason saw him record six tackles on punts and kickoffs — four in one game against the Miami Dolphins.
As NFL kickoff returns evolve, Malone's consistency will be crucial when the Falcons face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 8.
"If that's (what) they want me to embrace, I can do that," Malone said. "You got to start somewhere and just starting with special teams and leaving my mark, it's a blessing."
