The Atlanta Falcons have placed safety Micah Abernathy on injured reserve following a knee injury sustained during their Week 6 victory against the Carolina Panthers. The incident occurred during punt coverage after the Falcons' initial offensive possession, and Abernathy was ruled out within five minutes of gameplay.
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris commented on Abernathy's condition, stating, "Obviously, the rough one coming out of the game with the severe injury," and indicated that Abernathy would be absent for a significant period.
Abernathy has been an integral part of the Falcons' special teams, participating in 70% of their snaps over six games this season. He previously played for the Green Bay Packers in 2022 and made his NFL debut there.
In response to Abernathy's absence, the Falcons have signed offensive lineman Matt Hennessy to their active roster. Hennessy had reached his limit of three practice squad elevations with last Sunday's game against the Panthers. A third-round draft pick in 2020, Hennessy has participated in 41 games with 22 starts but has not yet taken a live snap this season.
Additionally, safety Dane Cruikshank and offensive lineman Coy Cronk have been added to the practice squad. These changes precede the Falcons' upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
