FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The latest Mailbox installment addressed several questions from Carl H. of Houston, Texas, focusing on quarterback mobility, defensive strategies, and the utilization of draft picks by the Falcons.
The first question discussed the potential use of backup quarterback Michael Penix Jr. due to starter Kirk Cousins' lack of mobility. Tori responded, "At this point in time, I do not feel there is any reason to do this." She emphasized that Cousins was signed with full knowledge of his strengths and limitations, stating that introducing Penix for specific plays could disrupt offensive continuity.
Regarding defensive strategy, Carl H. asked if the Falcons should increase their blitzing to pressure opposing quarterbacks more effectively. Tori noted that the team already ranks 12th in blitz percentage and highlighted a recent game against the Seahawks where they generated significant pressure without blitzing extensively. "The problem wasn't necessarily blitzing or not blitzing," she explained, adding that pass rush productivity remains an issue despite high-pressure rates.
Finally, addressing concerns about rookie draft picks not getting opportunities, Tori clarified that having a healthy salary cap allows teams to rely on experienced players initially. She pointed out Ruke Orhorhoro's recent emergence as an example of rookies gradually becoming active contributors. "Suffice to say, no, the draft picks are not 'so bad' that they don't get an opportunity," she stated.
