After a significant 20-point defeat against the Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons safeties Jessie Bates III and Justin Simmons openly addressed their responsibility for the team's defensive shortcomings. The two players took a leadership role by initiating a meeting at the beginning of Week 8 to reflect on their performance.
Falcons defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake praised Bates and Simmons for their professionalism and resilience. "The way they prepare every single day, by the way, they kind of bring it every single day in practice, the way they deal with hard things, a tough loss, and how they're able to carry themselves," Lake stated. He noted that younger team members benefit from observing these seasoned athletes.
Young safety Richie Grant acknowledged the impact of Bates and Simmons' guidance following the loss. Nickel Dee Alford echoed this sentiment, emphasizing an increased urgency in game situations: "They've been leaders every day, but this week specifically," Alford remarked.
This week's focus for the secondary unit has been on urgency, details, and communication—key areas highlighted by both Bates and Simmons. As they prepared for their upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, communication became a priority.
Defensive back Antonio Hamilton Sr. emphasized enhanced communication during film review sessions: "You can never communicate enough on the back end... whatever call is made, we make sure it's loud and everybody understands what we mean."
Assistant head coach/defense Jerry Gray supported this approach based on his extensive NFL experience: loud defenses are effective defenses.
Bates' and Simmons' leadership extended beyond their position group to influence the entire team throughout the week. Quarterback Kirk Cousins commented on their ability to balance starting fresh while maintaining high standards: "I think when you display that, people pick up on that... we need to reach a higher standard."
Their leadership has set an example across both defense and locker room dynamics as they aim to rebound from last week's performance.
