Free agent cornerback Dee Alford has signed a new one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons, according to the team's announcement on Monday.
Alford, who spent the last three seasons with the Falcons, entered the offseason as a restricted free agent. However, since he was not tendered by the team, he became an unrestricted free agent when the new league year began on March 12. Despite this, Alford will remain with Atlanta for another season.
Last season, the 27-year-old cornerback started in 11 games and participated in 16 overall, leading the team with 11 passes defended. He also registered 83 tackles, one forced fumble, one sack, and one tackle for a loss. Alford first became a starter in 2023 at the nickel position, where he displayed his ability to cause turnovers.
Alford experienced some struggles in coverage last season as the team's defense adapted to a new scheme and play style. However, his strong communication skills are highly valued by the team, which is crucial for a slot corner.
Over his three seasons with the Falcons, Alford played in 48 games and made 16 starts. His career statistics with Atlanta include 149 tackles, 24 passes defended, two fumble recoveries, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and one interception.
Alongside Alford, outside cornerback Mike Hughes is also returning, allowing the Falcons to retain four out of their five starting secondary players from last season. Safety Justin Simmons remains a free agent, but the team still counts on Jessie Bates III, A.J. Terrell, Hughes, and now Alford to maintain a competitive roster. This continuity may give the Falcons increased flexibility with their five picks in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
